What Local SEO Actually Means for a Central Texas Business
Local SEO is how you show up when somebody nearby is ready to buy. Not somebody across the country reading a blog post. Somebody in Harker Heights with a leaking roof, a dead AC unit in August, or a wedding next Saturday and no hair appointment.
Google decides who to show those people based on three things: relevance (do you actually offer what they searched for), distance (how close you are to the person searching), and prominence (how much the internet trusts you, through reviews, links, and mentions). You can't move your building. But relevance and prominence are completely in your control, and that's where we go to work.
I started Frederick Webb Digital Marketing in Killeen in 2017. I've watched plenty of good local businesses lose jobs to worse competitors for one reason: the other guy showed up on Google and they didn't. The system is set up so whoever has the better-built online presence wins the call. Our job is to make sure that's you.
Why Killeen and the Surrounding Area Is Different
Killeen sits right next to Fort Hood, and that changes how people find local businesses here. Military families move in and out all year long. Every month there's a new wave of people who don't know anybody in town. They don't have a barber, a stylist, a dentist, an HVAC company, or a roofer. So what do they do? They pull out their phone and search.
That means the Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove market rewards businesses that stay visible all the time. Word of mouth still matters. But a lot of your future customers haven't been here long enough to hear it. Google is their word of mouth.
Temple, Belton, and Waco each work a little differently too. Temple has a lot of medical traffic around the hospitals and clinics. Waco draws from Baylor and a big surrounding area. A strategy that works in one town doesn't automatically carry over, which is why we build separate pages and separate targeting for each city you serve.
The Map Pack vs. the Regular Results
When you search for a local service, Google usually shows two different sets of results:
The map pack (the top three)
Those three businesses with the map, the star ratings, and the call buttons. This is driven mostly by your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and how close you are to the searcher. For most local service businesses, this is where the phone calls come from.
The organic results (below the map)
The regular blue links. These are driven by your website: your pages, your content, your technical setup, and the links pointing to you. These results matter a lot for bigger decisions where people research first, like a new roof, a medical provider, or a full website build.
Good local SEO works both at the same time. Your profile gets you into the map. Your website backs it up and catches the people who scroll. And each one makes the other stronger.
What We Focus On First (and Why)
Most businesses don't need fifty things. They need the right five things done well. Here's where we usually start:
1. Your Google Business Profile
Wrong primary category, missing services, no service areas, three photos from 2019, no posts. We see it all the time. Fixing the profile is usually the fastest win on the board. Read more on our Google Business Profile optimization page.
2. Reviews
Reviews are a ranking factor and a conversion factor. A business with 140 reviews at 4.8 stars gets the call over a business with 9 reviews, even when the one with 9 reviews does better work. We set up automated review requests through a CRM so every happy customer gets asked at the right moment, without you having to remember.
3. Service pages that match real searches
If you do AC repair, AC installation, and duct cleaning, you need a page for each one. One "Services" page with a bulleted list doesn't rank for anything. Each page should answer the questions people actually ask: how much it costs, how long it takes, what's included, and why they should call you.
4. City pages that aren't copy and paste
A lot of agencies make twenty city pages, swap the town name, and call it a day. Google sees right through that. We write city pages with real local detail: the neighborhoods you serve, the jobs you've done there, and the reasons someone in that town should pick you.
5. Consistent listings everywhere
Your name, address, and phone number need to match on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook, the BBB, and the industry directories that matter for your trade. Our business citation service handles the cleanup.
Local SEO for the Industries We Know Best
We work with all kinds of service businesses, but we've spent the most time with these:
- HVAC companies: ranking for emergency searches like "AC repair Killeen" during the summer, and building steady maintenance-plan leads during the slow months.
- Roofers: getting found fast after hail and wind storms, and building trust with photos, reviews, and project pages for bigger replacement jobs.
- Salons and braiders: showing up for style-specific searches like knotless braids, silk press, or loc retwists, and connecting that traffic straight to online booking. See our salon marketing page.
- Medical practices: ranking for provider and specialty searches, and making sure every new patient inquiry gets answered. See our medical practice marketing page.
Where AI Search Fits In
More people are asking ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and other AI tools for recommendations instead of scrolling through links. Those tools pull their answers from the same places Google does: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your listings across the web.
So the work that gets you ranked in regular search is the same work that gets you mentioned in AI answers. We also structure your pages with clear questions and answers, add schema markup, and make sure your business details match everywhere, because that's exactly what AI tools look for when they decide who to recommend.
How Long Does It Take?
I'm going to be straight with you. Local SEO is not a light switch. Most businesses start seeing movement in the first 60 to 90 days, especially on their Google Business Profile. Competitive terms in bigger markets like Waco or Dallas-Fort Worth can take six months or more.
What I can promise is that you'll always know what we did, what changed, and what's next. No mystery reports. No "trust us." You'll see the calls, the direction requests, and the form fills, and you'll know whether it's working.
